Cant wait to hear about it. I am also doing Haiku and the kids seem really into it. I dont know if I am going to be able to talk my school into paying for it so I am feeling a little discouraged lately that I am doing all of this work for nothing. I just completed a unit on Chemicals through Haiku and never thought of assigning a Wiki project. I will definitely be looking into it. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Audrey - I have tried a student generated rubric and some self-assessing which I think are both important. I just can't really find an effective way for them to be involved in assessing writing. I have had them do a persuasive defense of their essay in the past but then it seems like I am reading the essay and the defense- a good exercise but not time saving. I think the answer is to cut down the amount of assessing that we do period and give more formative feedback. How to do this and maintain strong student effort and balanced and accurate grades is the question.

Great thoughts here, Amanda. A very wise soul once shared an insightful quotation with me: "Sometimes you have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down." I think we are all having to do that as educators in this age. Thanks for being so reflective and articulate about this "leap."

About the assessment piece...have you considered student-generated rubrics? Will they self-assess? I have rewarded accurate self-assessment in the past in an effort to include students in the assessment process more.

Our son, Matthew, is in Mrs. Ausbon's class and has loved this segment in the curriculum. He comes home every day excitedly relating his stories and celebrating "his words". It has been an amazing adventure. His hobbies have transitioned from trains, trucks and LEGOs to reading. In fact, his favorite enjoyment now is curling up with us and reading at night. Slowly but surely, he is cracking "the code" of reading by himself. The Writer's Workshop instilled this in him. Thank you so much!
